Happy Anniversary to the Volpino Club!

Tomorrow, July 20, is the first anniversary of the launch of the Volpino Club website! We now have fourteen members and eleven friends outside the USA listed. A special thanks to everyone who has joined and who has helped in developing our online community.

It has been a momentus year for Volpinos. Births in the U.S. and Canda, the recognition of the breed by UKC, and the first Volpino Champions crowned in the US. Hopefully the next year will bring even more members, more "firsts", and more Volpinos in the USA!

If any of you know of Volpino owners or breeders who are not members, please encourage them to join! As always its free!

Thanks again for all the help and input with the website!

Update on Clementine in California

Clementine ready for summer Well recently we've done some changes.

Clememtine went to get her summer trim, nails, and tooth examination. She's looks cooler for the summer. She started shedding about the middle of last month! So It was time!

Well it's starting off to be a warm summer in California and the first day of Summer being tomorrow I would say it's time to get the beach wear out head on down to the shore line!

Hope all is well with you all!

Sincerely, Brian Brinley

Volpinos Debut at UKC Premier

Volpinos made their debut at UKC's Premier Show last weekend in Kalamazoo, MI. This is UKC's "big show" for the year, with thousands of dogs on hand for four days of competition in conformation, agility, obedience and other performance tests.

Club members Kevin Joiner, with Regis and Roxy, and Karen and Mike Brennan, with Dezi and Bella, introduced many UKC show-goers to the Volpino. Hopefully next year even more Volpinos will be at Premier...and hopefully it will be a little cooler! Thanks to Mike for the photos!

ATAVI Website Up and Running

ATAVI (the Volpino Club of Italy), founded just last year, now has a website available. Much of it is still under construction, but will probably grow slowly (as has ours). You can surf the site at: http://www.volpinoatavi.it.

New/Additional Web Address

In addition to www.VolpinoClub.us, web surfers will also find out site under www.VolpinoItaliano.org. The new address simply "redirects" to the old one. Hopefully this will help web surfers find out website more easily. The .org extension reflects our status as an organization and not a commercial enterprise.

First Champion Volpinos in the USA!

This weekend my two Volpinos, Roxy and Regis, earned their Champion titles with UKC. Since CKC and ARBA have never had Champion Volpinos, and since the AKC doesn't even recognize the breed, this makes them the first in the USA! It's just one more "little step" in introducing Americans to our breed. The "little champions" are now ten months old.

Francini Roberto, of Colle Degli Ulivi kennel near Siena, Italy, has three pregnant females who will soon give birth to 9 to 18 Volpino puppies! Francini plans on a "bulk discount" for those wanting more than one puppy. See his website at www.VolpinoItaliano.com.

Francini has several Italian and European champions in his kennel. According to the 2006 World Dog Show results, Only del Colle Degli Ulivi (who just so happens to be the father of my Regis!) is the 2006 World Champion Volpino!

Anyone who has other birth announcements, please email them!

New Home

The Volpino Club website will be moved to a new home (web server) in the near future. Once the move is completed, the web address www.volpinoclub.us will be directed to the new home. It is hoped you will not notice any "outage", but in case you try to access the website in May and have trouble, just wait a few days and try again.

Also, we have received more entries for the Volpino Calendar 2008! Thanks to everyone who has submitted photos, but we want photos from every member, so keep 'em comin'!

Thus far we've only had one photo submitted for the calendar. Since I'll have more time to work on the project this summer (including twisting members'/friends' arms for submissions!), the plan is now for a 2008 Calendar, available in October or November.

Thanks to Emily (who isn't even a member...yet!) for the one beautiful photo we have so far.

It's Official! Top Ten Volpinos:

Regis & Roxy in the snow I noticed today that my two Volpinos are now listed as tied for first place for show points with UKC, in their "Top Ten List"! Of course they may be the ONLY Volpinos registered with UKC, and the only ones shown, but at least Volpinos are now "on the map" with UKC. I'm hoping both will win enough points by April to be "Champions".

Volpino Club member Lynn Higgins has her Lundehunds who finished as #2 and two tied for #3 in 2006...congrats Lynn!

Photo of possibly the "Most Influential Volpino Ever" added to our collection

This image is of one of the most famous Volpinos, and possibly the most influential. This painting was made by Charles Burton Barber in 1893 and is called "Marco on the Queen's Breakfast Table".

As stated in the Volpino history, Queen Victoria of England "discovered" Volpinos while on vacation in 1888 in Florence, Italy. She brought four of them home, including Marco pictured here. Victoria called them "Toy Pomeranians" since they so resembled the dogs called "Pomeranians" in England at the time (actually German Spitz, first imported in 1787, weighing 20 pounds or more).

Marco weighed 12 pounds and was thus much smaller than the Poms (German Spitz) Victoria had always known as her grandmother's dogs. It is said that Marco's "small" size gave her the idea to breed smaller and smaller "poms", resulting in the 3-7 pound Pomeranians known today.

So while Marco was not the genetic "Father of all Modern Pomeranians," it could be said that he was the "Father of Modern Pomeranians" in the sense that he influenced Victoria to start the modern small breed. And no doubt, as one of Victoria's "Champion Poms" and studs, Marco is a genetic ancestor of many Pomeranians living today. Thus here in full color is the Volpino-Pomeranian "missing link," though the link is not actually missing anymore (just the photo was...from our website)!

If interested, poster-sized or smaller copies of this image may be purchased on Ebay and from several other sources. Just search for "Marco on the Queen's Breakfast Table" and/or on the artist's name.

M. Mannucci is a Vice-President of the new club and has contacted us asking for information about Volpinos in America. Alessandro Valente, of Monte Frondoso, a breeder who has shipped several Volpinos to the USA, is one of the nine Council Members.

They do not have a website yet, but a link will be posted on our site if and when they do. Hopefully we can get many tips from this new organization of "Volpino experts" in the future! Thanks to Alessandro for sending us their new logo!

Volpinos Debut at UKC Show!

On Saturday November 5, 2006, I took my two puppies to the Mason-Dixon Multi-Breed Association dog show near Louisville, KY, a UKC sanctioned event. They competed in the Novice Puppy (no-points) section in the Northern Breeds class.

Roxy with her ribbons Being the only Volpinos there, of course Regis won "Best Male Novice Puppy" and Roxy "Best Female Novice Puppy" for Volpino Italiano, and Roxy won "Best Novice Puppy". But Roxy also won Second Place for "Best Puppy In Class" for the Northern Class, competing against puppies from several Northern (spitz) breeds. The Siberian Husky won first place, but Roxy won over two Eskies (standard and mini), the Alaskan Klee Klai (they were having their national specialty, and there were dozens of these there!), and several other breeds.

This was the first time a Volpino was shown in the USA in an event sponsored by one of the two major kennel clubs in the USA! Several breeders were interested in seeing the Volpinos, so hopefully such events will spread interest in our "our little secret" breed! I don't know yet if Volpinos have ever appeared in CKC (probably not) or ARBA (maybe) events. The Volpino was just recognized by UKC on July 1 this year.

For all you Volpino owners in the USA, I encourage you to enter your dogs in a show...it is fun, not too expensive, you'll meet lots of nice people (and dogs), it is good socialization for your dogs, and you'll be a "center of curiousity" with a rare breed! And you're guaranteed to get at least "Best of Breed" ribbon and compete in the Class show since you have the only Volpino at the show!

This was my first dog show ever, and I survived, and had a good time! Some suggestions:

  1. Bring a lawn chair...some show arenas are just large rooms and have no seating!
  2. Bring copies of the Volpino Standard, since the judges may have never seen a Volpino.
  3. Contact club member Lynn Higgins (lhiggins@myawai.com) who is very experienced at UKC and ARBA shows (with her rare-breed Norweigian Lundehunds)...she is a great help and hopefully soon a Volpino breeder as well!

Check out the UKC, CKC and ARBA websites for info on upcoming shows in your area. (Unfortunately, AKC still doesn't recognize the Volpino... but at least one AKC Eskie breeder at Saturday's show now wants to change that!)

GOOD NEWS! UKC RECOGNIZES THE VOLPINO ITALIANO!

Club members Kevin Joiner and Lynn Higgins recently submitted an application to the United Kennel Club requesting recognition of Volpinos. We received a response today.

It turns out that as of July 1, 2006, UKC recognizes all breeds recognized by the FCI (International Association of Kennel Clubs), and that includes the Volpino. This means all major Clubs in the USA now recognize the Volpino except for the AKC.

The UKC (not to be confused with the former "Universal Kennel Club", considered a "puppy mill club" by most) is the second oldest club in the USA, and has the world's largest registry for canine Performance. Since its beginnings, the UKC has focused on performance as well as conformation (good looks, breed standard), a concept they call The Total Dog.

Visit their website at http://www.ukcdogs.com for more information. Contact Vicki Rand, Editor UKC Publications, at VRand@ukcdogs.com for more information about registering Volpinos, or call their registration phone number listed on their web page.

GOOD NEWS! ARBA RECOGNIZES THE VOLPINO ITALIANO!

The American Rare Breed Association (ARBA), founded 1991, is a kennel club for "breeds not recognized by the AKC." ARBA holds Conformation Shows (like the AKC dog shows seen on TV) across the nation. (CKC, the only other American club known to recognize Volpinos, does not officially do Conformation shows, instead focusing on Performance)

While ARBA does not list the Volpino Italiano on its web page (their web site could use a little work, in my opionion), I called their main office in Maryland today and was told that ARBA automatically recognizes any FCI breed not recognized by AKC, and this includes the Volpino Italiano! (Volpinos are not listed on their website because no Volpinos have been registered!)

Registration papers from an FCI-affiliated club (like ENCI) are required to register dogs with ARBA. American-born dogs may be registered if both parents are ARBA-registered.

ARBA registration would be of interest to any U.S. Volpino owner who would like to become involved with conformation shows. Currently Lynn Higgins and I are working on getting UKC recognition for Volpinos, which does both Conformation and Performance shows.

ARBA's website can be found at http://www.arba.org

AKC/FSS rejects recognition of Volpino Italiano

Earlier in the summer of 2006, an application was sent to the American Kennel Club's Foundation Stock Service requesting recognition of the Volpino Italiano. The following is the response received by mail:

The Staff Committee for the AKC/FSS has reviewed the petition that you have submitted for acceptance of the Volpino Italiano into the AKC/FSS Program. The committee is concerned about the similarity between the Volpino Italiano and the American Eskimo. There are many similarities in comparing the two standards, and it is feared that it would be difficult to differentiate at this time.

The AKC/FSS Program will continue to evolve; as it does AKC encourages the breeders and exhibitors of the Volpino Italiano to continue to register their dogs with the ENCI.

AKC appreciates the interest in the FSS Program. Should you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Mari-Beth O'Neill
Assistant Vice President
Special Services
Email: mbo@akc.org

Of course the ENCI does not register dogs born outside of Italy, even if both parents are ENCI registered. AKC's standard for the American Eskimo Dog can be found here.
